Danica Patrick built her first NASCAR practice

By Gary Graves, USA TODAY
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Danica Patrick built her first NASCAR practice Wednesday around finding comfort rather than speed in her Nationwide Series car, leaving that tutorial for today's final session at Daytona International Speedway.
The Izod IndyCar Series race winner and most popular driver took her shots in 38 laps around the 2.5-mile track in JR Motorsports' No. 7 Chevrolet, posting a best of 182.990 mph that ranked 26th of 51 cars. Like Saturday's promising sixth-place finish in the ARCA Series race, Patrick found the outside of the high-banked oval to her liking and was eager to build on it today before qualifying for the Drive4COPD 300.
"It was a bit of a handful at times," Patrick said in the garage. "But I played my gas pretty safe. The car feels pretty fast, though. I feel like I can really pull up on people, and I catch them a lot coming out of the corner."

Patrick decided Monday to move her debut up a week at NASCAR's marquee venue. At every step she has been picking everybody's brains, starting with crew chief Tony Eury Jr., who was impressed with her curiosity, communication and composure in traffic.
"She just soaks it up, man," Eury said. "She just asks question after question, and we just try to give her answers."
"You don't hear her coming in saying, 'I'm going to conquer the world,' " ESPN analyst Marty Reid said. "She has talked about gaining respect, earning respect, giving respect. Obviously, she's got some skills that she can handle the car, and it'll be an adjustment."
